PSC Bunker Boys Golf Society

Monday, August, 5, Pattavia (white tees) – Medal

1st Peter Allen (30) net 69

2nd Lance Conway Jones (14) net 70

3rd Raleigh Gosney (17) net 72

Near Pins: Colin Greig (2), Trevor Priestly.

All the chatter back at the M Club concerned many of the unforgiving greens on this lovely track.  Unforgiving in the sense that you either holed it on your first attempt or you most likely three or four putted.  The pin placements were strategically placed in areas that gave you the feeling of being on a trolley car in San Francisco – up and down or down and up and back again was the order of the day.

We welcomed back two of our guys, Tony Robbins and Lance Conway Jones.  Tony had a hard time gripping a club after being away from Pattaya for nearly a month, and Lance was one of the few players, along with Peter Allen, who managed to negotiate the tricky greens.

The Bunker Boys pride themselves on knowing and playing by the rules of golf; and always observing the finest golf etiquette.  This adherence to etiquette was on display today as one of our groups found themselves struggling horrendously, quite obviously slowing the pace of play, and allowed their compatriots to play through.  An outstanding gesture of camaraderie and display of etiquette!

Wednesday, August, 7, Parichat (blue tees) – Stableford

1st Colin Greig (11) 30pts

2nd Les Cobban (8) 28pts

3rd Neil Carter (15) 27pts

Near Pins: Raleigh Gosney (2), Jimmy Carr.

At 6,300 yards off the blues, Parichat is one of the most demanding courses in the area.  In fact, if you are lucky enough to finish the round with the same ball you started with, you would most likely say you had a good day, regardless of score.  It’s the kind of track you need to play a half dozen times to get a true feel for and, even then, precision placement of your ball is paramount in order to stay out of the hazards.

Two unusual occurrences today: Les Cobban had an eagle on the 570 yard par-6 12th hole, and a Thai 6-ball let one of our groups play through.  This was the second round in a row that Jimmy, Neil, and their playing partners were being held up by slow play but allowed to play through due to an understanding of proper golf etiquette.

Colin finally found his game face on the 10th hole and romped home with twenty points on the back to take first place with a total of thirty.  Les Cobban, even with the eagle, could only manage twenty-eight for second place, and Neil Carter outdueled three other players on count back to take third with twenty-seven.

Friday, August 9, Khao Kheow A &C (yellow tees) – Stableford

1st Takeshi (14) 35pts

2nd Geoff Parker (14) 34pts

3rd Trevor Priestly (22) 31pts

Near Pins: John Philippines, Colin Greig, Raleigh Gosney, Geoff Parker.

Many of our guys were happy to be back on familiar turf after the Wednesday round at Parichat.  Some could even be heard to say, “now, this is a real golf course”.  Khao Kheow is indeed a world class championship course and it was in fine nick on this beautiful Friday afternoon in golf paradise.  One suggestion, however, would be for the caddie master to be diligent in providing bunker rakes for the caddies.  Clubbing it should refer to a night out on the town, not using your wedge to repair bunkers.

Both Trevor and Takeshi proved their mettle by hanging tough after a poor front nine: Takeshi with 22 points on the back to take first place with a total of 35, and Trevor with 22 on the back for a total of 31 to take third place.

The par-4 9th hole on the A-course was the scene of the exclamation, “WOW! what a putt”, as Colin sank a thirty-footer that moved up and then down, left and then right, before gently creeping over the edge to find the bottom of the tin.

Jomtien Golf with the IPGC

Monday, Sept. 5, St. Andrews – Stableford

A late cancellation from Green Valley and we were offered St. Andrews at the same price today, so there were no complaints.

Bob Poole.
Bob Poole.

There were five groups out with 10 players in each division and the equal cut set at 5-17.6 for the top flight and 18.1+ in the second division,

The best score returned was 36 points by both Chris Voller and Neil Gamble in division 1, Chris taking the top honours after edging Neil 16/14 on a back-nine count back.  In his last game with us for a while, Harry Vincenzi claimed third with 34 points.

Willy Van Heetvelde topped division 2 standings with 34 points while Colin James was second one point behind and Don Head took third after beating Bob Poole 22/16 on the back nine, both locked on 31 points overall.

Jerry Sweetnam was not in the reckoning today after driving the par-four 6th green but then three putting for a par.

Near pins went to (Div 1) Paul Butler, Martin Grimoldby, Jerry Sweetnam and Chris Voller, and (Div 2) Andy Ox, Bob Poole and Geoff Randall.

Martin Grimoldby birdied the 10th for the only ‘2’ in division 1 and with five rollovers in division 2, Bob Poole Willy and Van Heetvelde both birdied the 5th to split the pot.

Wednesday, Sept. 7, Treasure Hill – Stableford

An accident on the 331 just past the Pattana turn off led to a one hour and 15minute journey but luckily there was no one out in front and we teed off just in time, not holding the group up behind us.

Geoff Randall.
Geoff Randall.

As always here we were playing off the yellow tees and there were two 36’s coming in for the two divisions.  Paul Butler was the winner in division 1, with Chris Voller second on 35 and Terry Madsen third with 31.

A warm welcome return to William Chang and he was the winner in division 2, with the scuba diver Marty Aronson second on 30 points and Colin James in third with 25.

Near pins were claimed by (Div 1) Terry Madsen and Chris Voller, and (Div 2) William Chang.

Paul Butler birdied the 6th for the only ‘2’ in division 1 and there was a rollover in division 2.

Friday, Sept. 9, Eastern Star – Stableford

We had our largest group of the week for Eastern Star, with six groups out and an identical cut as in the week’s earlier outings.  There were still no GUR markings on the fairways but they had considerably improved except for the 15th and 16th which were totally under repair and we had preferred lies on these two holes.

Brian Green, playing off 15, scored 22 points on the front nine and won division 1 with 38 overall.  Chris Slota came in second on 37 points and Bill Bertram beat the Jasmine restaurant entrepreneur Paul Hartley 18/17 on the back nine for third after they both came in with 35 points each.

Frank Kelly was the winner in division 2 with 35 points while Colin Aspinall took second place on count back, beating Juergen Heinzius 19/17 on a back nine after they both scored 34 points in total.

Near pins went to (Div 1) Bill Bertram, Jerry Sweetnam (2) and Tom Yahnke, (Div 2) Steve Harris and Frank Kelly (2).

Paul Hartley birdied the signature 13th hole for the only ‘2’ of the day and scooped the first division pot.

PSC Golf from Tropical Golf Group

Tuesday, Sept. 6, Khao Kheow – Stableford

This is always one of our favourite stops, especially this day as most of our players had zipped off down to Hua Hin for a few days and we had relatively few for the trip.  But of course the quality was there as proved by playing off the yellow tees.

Tom Herrington (left) and John Pierrel (right) with one of BJ Lodge’s finest.
Tom Herrington (left) and John Pierrel (right) with one of BJ Lodge’s finest.

Our first group, a 3-ball, got off a little ahead of the allotted time and the test was to be the A & C nines, and with the way ahead seemingly clear we were in for a fast 18 holes.  The course was in great condition and it all looked set for a fine day.  That was until we encountered a 5-ball ahead of us after completing 4 holes.  Normally we would have been allowed through but on this day, despite the fact that the caddies phoned ahead, we were stuck behind for the next 14 holes until we finished our round.  Even our 4-balls behind caught up with us on the back nine.  You can never find a course marshall when you need one.

The four balls enjoyed themselves, they just had a nice amble around on a great course, but despite taking long breaks at every stop our 3-ball group was waiting to play on nearly every shot.

Back at BJ’s it was soon into the results.  The winner on the day was Tom Herrington with 37 points ahead of a count back on 33 points that saw John Pierrel in second and Barry Elphick third.  None of the first group were amongst the winners but they could be spotted in the corner having a few beers to recover.

Near Pins: Tom Herrington, Tommy Marshall, Barry Elphick

Friday, Sept. 9, St. Andrews – Stableford

The Tropical Golfers treated themselves to a rare outing to St. Andrews on Friday.  It’s more expensive than preferred, but we took advantage of Sports Day pricing to soften the blow, and the usual walkers don’t mind being “forced” take a ride once in a while.  Also sometimes you just have to test your golf skills against a tough foe and keep yourself humble.  With Hua Hin trips going on we still had 15 Tropicals show up for the challenge.

St. Andrews was in its usual good condition, but not excellent as one would expect.  Still the fairways and greens are utterly playable and better than most in the area.  About four greens were in various stages of recovery from recent coring, but at this course if that is your major obstacle to a good score you are having an excellent round and wouldn’t care.

There were plenty of low scores for the day, but surprisingly if you didn’t make handicap your job after the round was to listen and clap.

(L-R) Barry Elphick with Tom Herrington and Graham Buckingham.
(L-R) Barry Elphick with Tom Herrington and Graham Buckingham.

Barry Elphick (c/h 30) used his extra strokes to great advantage and gathered an impressive 40 points.  Great score on a tough layout!  Tom Herrington (20) finished a few strokes back with a fine 37 points, and Graham Buckingham (36) followed up with 36.  Good golf guys!

Near Pins:  Bob Watson (2), Mike O’Brien, Barry Elphick.

Travellers Rest Golf Group

This was the week when the TRGG faithful headed off to play their annual tour event over at Hua Hin.

Firstly I should own up and admit that I was not in attendance myself and I have not had the chance to speak to anyone who was, as they didn’t arrive back until late on Saturday night or in some cases maybe even on Sunday.  I can therefore only go by the posted results but even these throw up some interesting questions.

Carmen and Graham Hurdon.
Carmen and Graham Hurdon.

My first query would be – are all the golf courses in Hua Hin easier than the courses around Pattaya?  The winning scores each day were incredible, the lowest being 38pts and on most days were 40+.  The second query would be why, with roughly the same numbers playing each day, there were two division/flights on most days but not on Tuesday at Banyan Golf Club when there was only one.  It also appears that the split at Majestic Creek went somewhat awry as both divisions contained 16 handicappers.  Perhaps alcohol was playing a part in the proceedings by the time Friday came along.

Anyway I am sure everyone had a great time and will be saving up to go again this time next year.

Monday, Sept. 5, Imperial Lake View – Stableford

The week’s race to become King of the Mountains for a week started on Monday at Imperial Lake View (A and B courses).  In Division 1 Billy Ostle got off to a flying start by amassing 40pts, which was only just good enough to take the lead as he was followed home by Michael Prideaux and Neil Bramley, both recording 39pts.

In Division 2 Carmen Hurdon produced the best score of the day, 42pts, which shot her to the top of the first hillock.  J. Hegg and Tim Dalton needed a count back to determine who took second after they both finished with 32pts each, ten full shots behind the leader.

Div. 1 (0-15)

1st Billy Ostle (11) 40pts

2nd Michael Prideaux (10) 39pts

3rd Neil Bramley (8) 39pts

Div. 2 (16+)

1st Carmen Hurdon (18) 42pts

2nd J. Hegg (18) 32pts

3rd Tim Dalton (20) 32pts

Tuesday, Sept. 6, Banyan, G.C. – Stableford

On Tuesday it was over to play Banyan Golf Club and as already mentioned only one division on the day.  King of the heap on the day was Mr. J. Hegg and apologies for not knowing his first name.  He shot an excellent 42pts to take first place and there was a right dust up for second and third, with Tim Dalton getting the nod over Jim Cooper when they both finished on 38pts. Knowing Jim as I do, he then probably gave Tim a second nod also known as a Glasgow Kiss.

1st J. Hegg (15) 42pts

2nd Tim Dalton (20) 38pts

3rd Jim Cooper (16) 38pts

Thursday, Sept. 8, Springfield – Stableford

With the tour party having a day off on Wednesday, the battle recommenced on Thursday at Springfield (A and B courses).  In Division 1 Mike Sanders came to the party and shot an incredible 43pts, some feat for a 6-handicapper.  Graham Hurdon, also paying off six, came home with 41pts and probably couldn’t believe he only took second place.  Even third placed Bill Reid was probably in a state of shock when he discovered his 40pts left him as an also-ran.

In Division 2 Tim Dalton found that his 41pts made him belle of the ball.  Mike Calaz finished in second on 38 and John O’Donoghue took third with 35.

Div.1 (0-15)

1st Mike Sanders (6) 43pts

2nd Graham Hurdon (6) 41pts

3rd Bill Reid (13) 40pts

Div.2 (16+)

1st Tim Dalton (19) 41pts

2nd Mike Calaz (18) 38pts

3rd John O’Donoghue (17) 35pts

Friday, Sept. 9, Majestic Creek – Stableford

It was the turn of Majestic Creek (A and B courses) on Friday and it was here that if you were a 16-handicapper things got confusing as you probably were left uncertain whether you were in Division 1 or Division 2.  Never mind, unless your name was David Booth it probably didn’t matter.  David (a 16 handicapper) was relegated to Division 2 whereas Carmen Hurdon, also a 16 handicapper, found herself in Division 1.  David with his 44pts would of course have won Division 1 on the day instead of winning Division 2 as the records show.  Confused, yes well you are not the only one.

In Division 1 Graham Hurdon once again showed what a good golfer he is by running up another good score.  His 38pts was just a point better than his other half Carmen could muster.  Stewart Booth took third place.

In Division 2 the rather unlucky David Booth shot the best score of the day which left him standing on top of the mound.  A little lower down came Steve Dunstan on 35pts and a little lower still came Phil Semmens on 33.

Div. 1 (0-16)

1st Graham Hurdon (5) 38pts

2nd Carmen Hurdon (16) 37pts

3rd Stewart Booth (9) 36pts

Div. 2 (16+)

1st David Booth (16) 44 pts

2nd Steve Dunstan (25) 35 pts

3rd Phil Semmens (22) 33 pts

Saturday, Sept. 10, Black Mountain – Stableford

The tour drew to a close at Black Mountain Golf Club on Saturday.  In Division 1 Billy Ostle finished the week as he began it, on top of the pile.  He had a three shot lead over second placed Bill Reid, with Graham Hurdon a further three shots back in third place.

In Division 2 it was that lady again Carmen Hurdon who showed all the men the way home.  Her 40pts was easily the best score on the day and Michael Maguire on 35 and Jim Cooper on 32 could but wave her goodbye as she disappeared off over the hill.

Div. 1 (0-15)

1st Billy Ostle (10) 38pts

2nd Bill Reid (12) 35pts

3rd Graham Hurdon (5) 32pts

Div. 2 (16+)

Carmen Hurdon (16) 40pts

Michael Maguire (23) 35pts

Jim Cooper (16) 34pts

The King of the Mountain actually turned out to be Queen of the Mountain as Carmen Hurdon made mincemeat of all the men.  Only husband Graham got anywhere near her winning points total.  So it just goes to prove that history does repeat itself as the family Hurdon cleaned up last year as well.  Many congratulations to Carmen and Graham.

Good luck to all you golfers for the coming week and if you would like to play a round of golf with the TRGG, please phone Derek Thorogood on 080 673 3118 or pop into the Valentines Guest House Restaurant and Bar in Soi Lengkee and add your name to the weekly lists which are posted on the notice board.

Back in July, the Outback Golf Society in Pattaya held a birthday party and charity event to raise funds for the Sotpattana School for the deaf.  In total some THB 270,000 in donations was received from various individuals and companies to buy a new state of the art classroom hearing aid system, industrial washing machine and television for teaching use at the school.

Supported by main charity sponsors Chiaseri group, Electrolux, Pattaya Sports Club, and Broadgate Financial advisors and tens of other individuals and companies, the Outback had an amazing response and with donations still coming in a further THB 40,000 was deposited in their charity fund for other meaningful projects to be worked on in a next phase.

The handover ceremony of the requested items to Sotpattana School was held on 8 September.  “Thanks again for your generous support and trust in us to help make a difference,” commented Andre afterwards.

PSC Golf from The Outback Golf Bar

Monday, Sept. 12, Banyan G.C. – Stableford

A great start to our Hua Hin tour with 24 keen players taking on the fabulous course at Banyan Golf Club.  After golf, Greg Hill and lovely Tuk went out of their way to give us a warm welcome at their fabulous home near the course for after golf drinks and snacks.

Sel Wegner (right) receives his trophy from Andre Coetzee.
Sel Wegner (right) receives his trophy from Andre Coetzee.

A few fines had already been recorded on day 1, as one of our famous Outbackers and a favorite to win didn’t make it past the ladies’ tee twice on the first hole!  Also not handing in scorecards after the round was a definite fine for another couple of fellas and then there was Dennis Pelley, who ranks at the bottom pile when it comes to investing his money wisely. Said enough!

The day belonged to Sel Sel Wegner who recorded an awesome 40 points to take the 1st day lead ahead of Lloyd Landrie on 39, John Stafford on 38 and Don Lehmer, Bill Broschart and Neil Skilton all on 36.

2’s were recorded by Neil Skilton, Peter Nixon and Murray Hart.

Wednesday, Sept. 14, Springfield G.C. – Stableford

With light rain falling on the way to the course and a day of rain predicted, our group of Outbackers was lucky to finish in time before some heavy rain descended on Hua Hin.

After playing the originally planned course Palm Hills a day after as an extra day, the decision to switch to Springfield for our tour was a great choice in hindsight.  Springfield was in much better condition and everyone was pleased with the way the course presented itself, although the clubhouse restaurant get bad marks (at least in my view).

In Division B, Tom Flanagan’s 33 points was good enough to land him third place, Alex Field had a good 35 points for second spot and Don Lehmer scored another good round of 37 to land the top podium position.

In the A division, John Stafford scored 37 points for third while Lloyd Landrie, with a magnificent 24 points on the back 9 just edged John on count back.  Neil Skilton had another scorching 3 over 75 from the blue tees to give him 38 points and top spot today.

Neil Skilton, Sel Wegner, and Murray Hart each had a ‘2’.

Thursday, Sept. 15, Black Mountain – Stableford

A bit cruel perhaps at Black Mountain, where I had all the regulars play off the 65 markers, but being the final day with things very close at the top the course presented a fair test that way.  In the end, Greg Hill finally came good and scored a great 39 points to win the A division, followed by Graham Rice.  In the B division, Alex Fieldi conquered Black Mountain with a great 37 points, with a big gap to Andrew Makara on 34 in second.

Overall, things were hotly contested with Lloyd Landrie, John Stafford and Sel Wegner each finishing with only a point between them to determine this tour’s winner.  Sel was the proud winner of the tour, having played consistent golf for all three days and posting 111 points in total.  John was second a point behind and Lloyd took third on 109.

The next Outback organized trip to Hua Hin will be from 12-17 March 2017.

Sunday, Sept. 11, Green Valley – Medal

Back on an ever-improving Green Valley today and time once again for our monthly medal competition.

Frank McGowan.
Frank McGowan.

We had a new winner and today it was a very close call, with the count back going down to the last six holes.  Frank McGowan was the winner with a net seventy one which included a two shot penalty for playing a wrong ball out of a bunker, something which in the past would not have been a penalty but now is after a rule change.

Paul Pavloff was the one who lost out on the count back but he wasn’t too disappointed as he has already got a medal and is qualified for the gold medal competition in January.

There was a gap of four shots between the top two and the third place, with Donal McGuigan the bronze with a net seventy five.  Rod Torrie got the fourth place with a net seventy six, beating Allan Parker into the fifth and last podium place on count back.

Although we had a reasonably large group out today we had no ‘2’s.

1st Frank McGowan (19) net 71

2nd Paul Pavloff (5) net 71

3rd Donal McGuigan (17) net 76

4th Rod Torrie (11) net 76

Thursday, Sept. 15, Burapha – Stableford

Only two games this week as we didn’t play on Tuesday due to bad weather.  On Thursday we had a very nice day for golf with no rain and not too hot.  Again we decided to play two flights, off both the blue and white tees to make it enjoyable for everyone.  Although the course was playing long with all the rain over the past few days, we still got the best score of the day off the blue tees.

Lyle Blaw.
Lyle Blaw.

Lyle Blaw had an excellent round and was a very clear winner with forty points.  A distant second and six points behind Lyle was Jon Batty with thirty four points, Jon beating Mark Lang on count back.

Off the white tees Gus Guidetti, who is back for a short break, came out on top with thirty seven points.  Joe McArdle was six points behind Gus but still got the second place and Russell Gilroy took the third spot on a count back which went down to the last six holes ver Don Everett, both tied on thirty points.

We had no ‘2’s today in either flight.

PSC Golf from Lewiinski’s Golf Society

Sunday, Sept. 11, Green Valley – Medal

1st Chris Martin (15) net 69

2nd Barry Copestake (18) net 69

3rd Aiden Murray (23) net 73

Chris Martin (right) with Peter Henshaw.
Chris Martin (right) with Peter Henshaw.

Last week was what you might call a bit hot and very humid, but having said that it did not deter our hardier members from turning out to play our monthly medal at Green Valley.

The course was in its usual fine condition with the greens playing very true, which suited Chris Martin down to the ground as his net 69 was good for the top rung of the ladder.  Mind you, he did need the aid of a count back to edge Barry ‘the boot’ Copestake into the silver spot on the podium.  Chris picked up a bottle of Jameson’s Irish whiskey, an invite to play in the gold medal to be played in December, and of course he gets his name etched onto the Lewiinski’s wall of shame.

Aiden Murray rounded out the podium with a steady net 71.

Monday, Sept. 12, Pleasant Valley – Stableford

1st Takeshi Hakozaki (16) 35pts

2nd Bernard Green (29) 33pts

3rd Peter Henshaw (23) 30pts

The Lewiinski’s gang traveled up Highway 7 under dark and threating skies to take on the tough Pleasant Valley golf and Country Club.  The course was in excellent condition despite the monsoon weather we have been experiencing lately.

The lads on the day found the going tough as the scores would indicate.  Standing atop the podium was Takeshi Hakozaki with 35 points and he was followed up the podium steps by Bernard Green with 33.  It was left to Peter ‘the silver surfer’ Henshaw to close the flight podium with just 30 points.

Wednesday, Sept. 14, Treasure Hill – Stableford

1st Chris Martin (14) 32pts

2nd Kevin Rogers (11) 30pts

3rd Peter Henshaw (23) 30pts

Treasure Hill was the task at hand for the Lewiinski’s gang on Wednesday, and we all know this is a very tough nut to crack.  It must be said that considering the amount of rain we have had recently the course was in fine condition, but even so it proved to be too much of a challenge for the boys today as no player matched their handicap.

Leading the boys into the barn was the man riding a purple patch, Chris Martin, with 32 points and he added today’s win to his Sunday medal victory.  Chris was two shots clear of two of Lewiinski’s best, Kevin ‘the thunder from down under’ and Peter ‘the silver surfer’ Henshaw, and when the mud had settled it was Kevin who got to stand on the second step of the podium, leaving Peter with his second third place finish of the week.

Friday, Sept. 16, Burapha A & B – Stableford

1st John Bland (14) 38pts

2nd Marcus Earp (29) 38pts

3rd Kevin Rogers (12) 36pts

A small but select field took to the road today to play Burapha A + B nines.  Rain threatened but did not interrupt play and the weather was not too hot and with a slight breeze.

Two long time Lewiinski regulars, Jimmy ‘two shots’ Elphick and Adam Barton fought out a tight game in their private battle, which ended in a tie when Jim answered Adam’s 2 on the last par 3 with a par, but Jim had a shot on the hole.

The winner on the day was John Bland with 38 points but he needed the aid of a count back decision over the unlucky Marcus Earp.  Kevin ‘the thunder from down under’ Rogers rounded out the flight with a sound even par round.

Note: Lewiinski’s is situated on Pattaya land Soi 1, Beach Rd Soi13/13 near Walking Street.  Anyone wishing to play with us just pop in and add your name to the list or call Peter on 0861396301. Transport is provided.

PSC Golf from The Growling Swan

Monday, Sept. 12, Bangpra – Stableford

A medium size field headed out to Bangpra with dark threatening clouds overhead, the rain started just as we arrived at the course.  Few of us were reluctant to pay our green fees until the rain had stopped, which it did until the second group were on the first green.  Poor Graham Buckingham had a four-putt on the first as the heavens opened and almost washed him away.

Jayson ‘Chonburi’ Schembri.
Jayson ‘Chonburi’ Schembri.

Play was held up for about 15 minutes, then another 5 minutes to give the green on the 2nd time to drain a little.  Once we got started again we pretty much got through until the end where the last two groups encountered a wee bit more precipitation.  Boy it got quite dark in the final few holes.

There was only one division, given the numbers, and a victory was awarded to Jayson “Chonburi” Schembri on his farewell game.  He scored a steady 35 points in trying conditions.  A score he was happy with given he only had 4 points after the first 5 holes.

Two shots back in second was Patrick Poussier while newcomer Mikito Homma came third and fourth place was decided by way of a count back, Bill “Buffalo” Steinmann edging out Keith Buchanan and Mashi Kaneta.

1st Jason Schembri (22) 35pts

2nd Patrick Poussier (27) 33pts

3rd Mikito Homma (18) 29pts

4th Bill Steinmann (12) 28pts

Near Pins: #2 Mashi Kaneta, #8 Jayson Schembri, #12 Bill Steinmann, #17 Geri Crilly

Long Putts: #9 Peter Dane, #18 Patrick Poussier.

Back at the Growling Swan birthday greetings were given to Nolan Wise, who promised to sleep in his own bed that night.  Given the policy of the hotel that it is not appropriate to sleep in other rooms you have not paid for.  Let’s leave it at that!

Thursday, Sept. 15, Burapha – Stableford

There were plenty of buses and cars loaded with golfers who headed to the “Beaut” golf course, Burapha.  Always well presented, Burapha once again shone with well manicured fairways and true greens, despite having received plenty of wet stuff over the past few days.

The course was quite busy with many groups ahead of us and we were slightly late in teeing off, however we completed the A and B nines from the white markers in good time and with very little hold up at all.  The playing conditions were ideal.

It always makes golfing that much more pleasurable when one has a good looking caddy, who enjoys a laugh, understands and speaks our lingo (language) and knows her greens and golf etiquette… This is probably why Martin Todd did so well today.

Rattling in several birdies on his way to a sterling 42 points off his 11 handicap, a happy caddy and an even happier golfer celebrated with a big hug when Toddy’s final par putt dropped in the last hole.  There was, however, another happy camper nipping at his heals with everybody’s Swiss friend, Walter Baechli, finishing with a very creditable 40 points off his 16 handicap.

Other notable scores were Keith Buchanan 39 points (16), J.J. Harney 37 points (14), and Graeme Buckingham with 36 points off his (23) handicap.  Also with 36 points were Mike Gosden and Brian Wilkinson.

There were 3 divisions (A, B and C) each with 3 winners, however A and B divisions needed count backs to determine third place getters.

Missing out in A division were the two “Jims” Brady and Groves, and missing out in B division were Mike Gosden and Brian Wilkinson.

2nd Keith Buchanan (16) 39pts

C Flight

1st Alan Sanders (24) 34pts

2nd Sandy Leiper (30) 31pts

3rd Geri Crilly (26) 29pts

Near Pins: A3 – Glenn Smith, A6 – Walter Baechli, B3 – Keith Buchanan, B8 – Martin Todd

Long Putts: A9 – Jim Groves, B9 – Peter Grey.

Note: For serious golfing with a dash of fun (and compulsory sledging), the Growling Swan welcomes golfers of all persuasions.  We generally play on Mondays and Thursdays at any one of the fine courses around Pattaya.  We also encourage women to play. Please contact Peter Grey for bookings or any information on 086 1503 086.

The Growling Swan also caters to the bowls enthusiasts. Bus transport departs the GS on Sundays at 10.00 am for open grass bowling at The Retreat. The cost including return bus transport, bowling fees and a hot lunch is less than 400 baht so great value for a day out.

PSC Golf from the Billabong Bar

Wednesday, Sept. 14, Silky Oak – Stableford

The only people that enjoyed the weather on Monday were the green keepers and our friends of the feathered variety when it rained all day long.  So opening the curtains on Wednesday morning and the weather forecast which was not encouraging, it was obvious that we were going to have what we know as a typical summer’s day in UK, with dark clouds threatening during the morning, but that threat only became a reality when we had finished and were putting the clubs in the car.

Andrew Woodall with Geoff Christie and Lloyd Shuttleworth.
Andrew Woodall with Geoff Christie and Lloyd Shuttleworth.

The police had a charity golf day and occupied Green Valley hence our change to Silky Oak, which made a pleasant change.  The fairways resemble a deep piled carpet but the greens need some attention.  If they were as good as those at Green Valley, the course would be in excellent condition.  What a nice course this is and the views at the 14th green are spectacular wherever you look.

Birthday girl Sha with Orn, Som and Julie.
Birthday girl Sha with Orn, Som and Julie.

The scores will involve some cutting of handicaps, for less than 40 points offered no opportunity to have a glimpse of the podium.  Gary Bancroft, a visitor from New Zealand, achieved that objective with 40 points and another visitor, this time from the land of Oz, was the PSC golf Chairman’s brother Brett occupying second spot with 43 points.  Paul Sharples only remembers recording more than 40 points on one other occasion but today he played to 8 under his handicap with 44 points.

The ladies also showed good form, with Miss Orn having 38 points and the fast improving Miss Som coming 2nd with 40.  But the day belonged to Miss Julie with one of her best ever scores on 42 points.  Surprisingly, there were no 2s for the ladies but the men made up for that with five, going to Lloyd Shuttleworth, Wayne Cotterell, Dave Casha, Geoff Christie and Gary Bancroft.

Friday, Sept. 16, Burapah – Stableford

Burapha was our venue today, playing A and B loops and once again the course is in great condition, but the rough was absolutely brutal – not a day to miss the fairways, believe me.  With nine groups playing we got away a little early and in perfect weather.

The scoring was right up there with the best you will see anywhere.  Fifth place on a count back went to our Kiwi friend Geoff Christie with 39 points while taking fourth and also on 39 was Lloyd Shuttleworth.  Third place went to another of our Kiwi friends, Andrew Springford with 40 points and second to the lovely Miss Nantaporn Rukkid with 41.  Top spot on the podium was reserved for Andrew Woodall who won by a country mile with a magnificent 47 points, that’s 76 off the stick from a 15 handicap.  A great round of golf!

There were three 2s coming from Brett Gale, Gary Bancroft and Michael Lausch.

PSC Bunker Boys Golf Society

Sunday, Sept. 11, Dragon Hills G.C. – Stableford

1st Geoff Parker (14) 39pts

2nd Neil Carter (15) 37pts

3rd Colin Greig (11) 35pts

Near Pins: Steve Welman, Geoff Parker, Neil Hurst.

It has become a tradition for the Bunker Boys to have a week’s golf in and around Hua Hin each low season during their Golf Festival.  The decision was certainly justified when the group we left behind got rained out at Khao Kheow on the Monday

Colin Greig (right) receives his trophy after winning the Hu Hin golf tour.
Colin Greig (right) receives his trophy after winning the Hu Hin golf tour.

An early start from Pattaya and three hours driving and the first port of call was Dragon Hills, a delightful layout in good condition close to Ratchaburi.  The players enjoyed the cooler weather with some excellent scores.

Geoff Parker started the tour with a bang and his excellent 39pts easily took first place, followed by Neil Carter with 37 while Colin Greig took third place on count back from Neil Hurst, both with 35pts.

Tony Robbins decided to take a 3 week break from golf prior to the tour and on his return he foolishly had a round at Parichat, so he was still shell-shocked and had a wretched day with only 13 points on his scorecard.  Steve Welman capped an average day with a great near pin.

The only downside was a slow six-ball that hit off just in front of us and held up the field all day.  We were lucky with the weather as the rain hit as we left the course, leaving a dark wet drive down to Hua Hin.

Monday, Sept. 12, Majestic Creek G.C. – Stableford

1st Neil Hurst (12) 43pts

2nd Colin Greig (11) 40pts

3rd Lance Conway-Jones (15) 39pts

Yet another excellent course with a very traditional layout.  Heavy rain overnight had left the ground wet in places so ‘lift clean and place’ was in order.  Conditions were obviously favorable as half the field had 36pts or better.  Everybody enjoyed the course and it’s a definite for next year’s schedule.

Local boy Neil Hurst reveled in the conditions and easily took first place with 43pts.  Colin Greig again played well and with 40pts took second place.  Lance Conway-Jones edged out Neil Carter on count back for third with 39pts.  Lee Butler, yes the sartorially dressed Lee Butler with his trademark bath towel draped on his bag, closely followed with37pts.

Tuesday, Sept. 13, Springfield G.C. – Stableford

1st Neil Hurst (12) 37pts

2nd Ross Schiffke (20) 36pts

3rd Lance Conway Jones (15) 34pts

Near Pins: Graeme Henry, Ross Schiffke, Mitch Squire, Les Cobban.

On to Springfield, the Jack Nicklaus designed gem where it appeared to be Pattaya day as the group from the Outback bar teed off before us and Kilkenny’s followed us, giving around 60 Pattaya golfers on the course. (Maybe it’s time the Pattaya courses organised a similar discount period in high season).

Again it was local boy Neil Hurst leading the way with 37 points.  Ross Schiffke, who had spent the previous week practicing and was on his 8th game in 10 days came second with 36 points and Lance Conway–Jones (becoming the count-back king) took third on count back from Les Cobban, both with 34pts.

This is not an easy course and the pressure took its toll on some of the early leaders, with Geoff Parker, Lee Butler and Neil Carter all struggling to 25pts

Wednesday, Sept. 14, Black Mountain G.C. – Stableford

1st Les Cobban (8) 36pts

2nd Colin Grieg (11) 36pts

3rd Neil Carter (15) 32pts

Near Pins: Mitch Squire, Lee Butler, Graeme Henry, Colin Greig.

Everybody who goes to Hua Hin wants to play Black Mountain despite the expensive fees.  Today was our turn and of course it was in excellent condition.  However the conditions were not favorable, there had been heavy rain overnight so there was no run and playing off the 6,500-yard tees it was very difficult for all but the big hitters, especially on the steep uphill holes (which are a bit gimmicky).

It got even tougher because after waiting in excellent weather to tee off by the third hole the weather turned on us and we had 8 holes of very gusty winds with rain squalls.  Fortunately things improved on the back nine.

Our lowest handicappers, Les Cobban and Colin Greig, each scored 36pts with Les edging Colin on count back for first place.  Neil Carter took third place over Jimmy Carr on count back, both with 31pts.

Shot of the day went to Mitch Squire who hit a majestic 6-iron on the par 3 third hole to 3 feet all the way along the ground and popped in the putt for a birdie and 4pts.

This is an excellent but tough venue and it was disappointing with the high fees to find no hot water in the showers.

Thursday, Sept. 15, Subhapruek G.C. – Stableford

1st Jimmy Carr.(16) 34pts.

2nd Les Cobban (8) 31pts

3rd Lance Conway-Jones(15) 30pts

So to the last day and after a 3-hour drive from Hua Hin a pretty tired group of Bunker Boys arrived at Subphapruek Golf Course south of Bangkok for our final round.  Our organiser elected to play off the Champion tees at a stated 6,400 yards and it proved a bit ambitious as the tees were all back and it played well over 6,600 yards, with very heavy ground conditions giving no run at all.

This is a very nice park type course with plenty of lateral water hazards and water carries on the par 3s.  All found it tough however it transpired that Jimmy Carr had played here many times before and his local knowledge certainly helped as he easily took first place with 34pts.  Les Cobban took second place with 31 and Lance Conway-Jones, without a count back, placed third with 30pts.  It was a very weary group that sat down in the clubhouse.

The tournament was the best four rounds out of the five and starting the last day Colin Greig had a commanding lead, with Les Cobban, Neil Carter and Lance Conway-Jones in with a chance.  Les hung in to the end but could quite make it and Colin, despite a tired last round 23pts held on to win the Hua Hin trophy 2016.  Congratulations to Colin, with Les a worthy runner up.

Friday, Sept. 16, Plutaluang G.C. – Stableford

1st Tore Eliassen (20) 29pts

2nd Trevor Priestly (22) 28pts

Near Pin: Trevor Priestly.

Surprise, surprise, none of the Hua Hin tourists made it to Navy on Friday resulting in a very small field.  However, those who did had an enjoyable day with Tore Eliassen beating Trevor Priestly by a single point.  Trevor had the consolation of the only near pin and scooping the pool.

Note: The Bunker Boys play out of The M Club located 100 meters up Soi 14 off of 3rd Road and no prior booking is required, new players merely turn up by 9.30 A.M. on any Monday, Wednesday or Friday and enjoy a game with us.  We arrange transport which departs at 10 A.M. for a booked tee time at 11 A.M. It has been a busy summer for sport with the Olympics and Paralympic Games adding to the regular sporting schedule.

Watcharaphon Vongsa (front right) and Worawut Saengampa (front left) won gold and silver respectively for Thailand in the Individual Boccia at the Rio Paralympics.
Watcharaphon Vongsa (front right) and Worawut Saengampa (front left) won gold and silver respectively for Thailand in the Individual Boccia at the Rio Paralympics.

Thailand once again participated in both events and as in previous years the Paralympians returned home to the ‘Land of Smiles’ with more gold, silver and bronze medals than their Olympic compatriots.  Every four years, since Thailand joined the Paralympic Games in 1984, the athletes with disabilities have won more medals than the able bodied athletes.  This year they won six gold, six silver and six bronze medals.

Pichaya Kurattanasir (right) won a bronze medal in the 1500m wheelchair race.
Pichaya Kurattanasir (right) won a bronze medal in the 1500m wheelchair race.

And yet the Paralympians do not get as much recognition nor receive the same financial rewards as the able bodied.  The two Thai gold medalists at the Olympics received 12 million baht each from the government, plus much more from private companies.  By contrast, the six gold medalists returning from the Paralympics will receive just over 7 million.

Of the forty-five athletes who participated at the Rio Paralympics, seven are former students at the Redemptorist Vocational School for People with Disabilities here in Pattaya.

The Thai athletes competed in fourteen sports and sixty three different events and the seven former students, two females and five males, competed in a variety of sports including athletics, javelin, power-lifting, boccia, table tennis and pistol shooting.  Most took up their chosen sport after being introduced to it while studying at the school.

Watcharaphon Vongsa, who is a wheelchair user due to having cerebral palsy, joined the school in 2009 to study Computer Science but left early to train with the national Boccia team which went to the London 2012 Paralympic Games, where he won a gold medal.

Since then he has traveled the world competing in his sport and following the Rio Games he returned to Thailand with two gold medals, which he won in the mixed individual Boccia competition and also as a member of the team competition.

Former electronics student Pichaya Kurattanasir carried home a bronze medal, which he won in the 1500m wheelchair race.

Narong Kasanun, Thailand national power-lifter, finished fourth at the Rio Games in the 58kgs weightlifting division.
Narong Kasanun, Thailand national power-lifter, finished fourth at the Rio Games in the 58kgs weightlifting division.

Another former student, and a current teacher at the school, Narong Kasanun, came fourth in the 58kgs power-lifting division, lifting a final weight of 165kgs, almost two and a half times his own body weight, not an easy task when you have no use of your lower limbs.

Since its founding in 1984 the school has a long tradition of encouraging students to take up a sport, not only for fun, but to give a sense of achievement, to build confidence and in many instances students have been selected to represent the school, the province and the Kingdom at national and international competitions.

When the next Paralympic Games opens in Tokyo in 2020, the Thai team will once again compete, and as the parade of athletes enters the stadium many will be former students at the school in Pattaya.  Once again the Paralympians will more than likely return with more medals that their able bodied fellow citizens and still receive less recognition and less reward money, something many rely on to provide for their own families.

Firkin’s flooded farewell

IPGC Pattaya Golf Society at The Links Bar

On Monday, 12th September the Pattaya Golf Society visited a very soggy Treasure Hill to play a stableford round under heavy skies and with little prospect of a completed competition.  The rains were incessant and it drove one group off the course early, the rest manfully bluffing it out against Mother Nature.  Mother knows best!

Emerald Golf Course.

Of those who completed the round, Mike Firkin celebrated his final game this trip with a third place finish on 29 points, which included a monstrous putted birdie on the seventeenth.  Jim Ferris went one shot better with his second placed 30 points but Mr. Seil, who fared better under the best of the weather, finished with 31 points for the win.

The damp squib of a day saw Bryan Barrell receive the non-winners’ consolation beer as golfers constantly tried to get comfortable on Pattaya’s first real full day of rain this low season.  More to come yet, as we are reliably informed!

Morrison’s moment

The Pattaya Golf Society revisited Bangpra for the first time in six months on Wednesday, 14th September and witnessed a long-awaited improvement in the course after a tough few months at the start of the year.  Fairways were lush and the current storm period has left them soft, with slowish greens also.

The large PGS group enjoyed the return and no more so than the two golfers sharing second place, Jim Ferris and Masa Takano.  Both scored 33 points and for Masa it was a fitting way to draw the veil on his latest visit.  In first place was Aussie Wayne Morrison who played his best golf with the PGS, returning 35 points without a wood in his bag and only a half set for company.  Is that how you play Bangpra I wonder?  Wayne’s delight was only tempered by the thought of a return to Oz later in the evening, but it was a fitting way to go.

Russell Exley recorded the only birdie ‘2’, on the picturesque eighth hole and the consolation beer was reserved for Jon Batty, only just missing out on a place but far enough away to be included in the non-winners’ draw.

It had been a joy returning to Bangpra and it will be a welcome regular on the future PGS schedules.

Flood dominates Emerald

The Pattaya Golf Society concluded an eventful week with a visit to Emerald on Friday, 16th September.  The week had begun with an inundation at Treasure Hill and was to end with a ‘Flood’ in Ban Chang!

The course itself was in good condition with well grassed fairways which were a little soft after a week of rain and greens which were nevertheless still quite quick.  Again the course was virtually empty.

For the record, Colin Service found a place on the podium for the first time with 30 points which gave him third place.  Ahead was Chiang Mai’s favourite farmer, Wichai Tananusorn, his gross 84 giving him 31 points for second.  The winner was Irish golfer Karl Flood who overcame a temporary blackout after a few holes to post a score of 34 points.

There were no birdie ‘2’s again and the non-winners’ beer was won by a delighted Greg Gawron.

Thus ended another fine week with the PGS and of course there is plenty more to come.

IPGC Golf from The Haven

Monday, Sept. 19, Crystal Bay – Stableford

CSS 75 NC

1st Gus Guidetti (12) 33pts

2nd Markku Tynell (21) 32pts

3rd John Carlin (17) 31pts

Probably the wettest week that most of the local golfers have ever experienced in the Pattaya area started out at Crystal Bay on Monday.

Heavy overnight rain that continued into the morning’s start off time from the Haven left a much reduced band of dyed in the wool golfers hoping that the day’s event would be able to be completed.  Unfortunately just three of them finished the day as the conditions worsened as the rounds progressed, and with the scores hardly scratching the surface it was no surprise to find the CSS had gone out to the maximum and become non-counting for upward review.

Gus Guidetti continued with his incredible run of form, taking yet another win with another score well over his handicap, but still good enough.

Markku Tynell stuck with him until the very end, just missing out by a single point, with John Carlin another shot away in third place.

All three were commended for their fortitude in completing the course at the prize giving

There were no 2s in either of the divisions.

Wednesday, Sept. 21, Pattana A & C (yellow tees) – Stableford

CSS 74

1st Mark Lang (6) 39pts

2nd Mike Dabanovich (12) 37pts

3rd Gus Guidetti (12) 36pts

4th Lyle Blaw (11) 35pts

5th Phil Cass (16) 32pts

6th Alan Pilkington (7) 32pts

Wednesday was another day when the conditions were extremely wet but at least it stayed dry, apart from for the last group that is who got totally soaked as they completed the final hole in driving rain – none of them scoring a point and subsequently some of them dropping out of contention for a podium placement.

Mark Lang followed up an outstanding round earlier in the week that had seen him return to a category 1 handicap level, with another good effort at three under handicap and one that saw his handicap further reduced to its lowest level for eighteen months.  It was certainly good enough for another win by two ahead of the hard charging Mike Dabanovich, who saw his chance of another photo op to show off his new hair styling disappear once again as he settled for second place.

Gus Guidetti.
Gus Guidetti.

Gus Guidetti thought he had done more than enough to win as he returned a level handicap card after winning on three previous occasions without playing to handicap, but this time he had come across two very determined rivals in good form and so only managed third place.

Lyle Blaw stuck close in fourth spot just one adrift as Phil Cass and Alan Pilkington had to be separated by a count back for fifth and sixth, which Phil won with a better 18 to 16.

Phil Cass cleaned out the rollover pot on the second division 2s pool and Mike Dabanovich and Alan Pilkington did the same in the first division.

Friday, Sept. 23, Pattaya C.C. – Stableford

CSS 75 NC

1st Phil Cass (16) 32pts

2nd Mike Hill (20) 30pts

3rd John Carlin (17) 26pts

4th Terry Hodgkiss (26) 25pts

The inclement weather was still not done with the group as the last outing of the week was also preceded by overnight rain.  The numbers understandably were reduced once again as the forecast for the day had been thunder and lightning interspersed with heavy rain.  In the event the worst of the weather held off, with just a splattering of rain at the start of the rounds and fortunately no thunder and flashes.

The course was difficult to score on as the end results bore witness, with once again none able to make the standard of within two of handicap and so once again the CSS went out three and became non-counting.

Phil Cass had the best day to take the win by two from Mike Hill as they both suffered from the extreme lack of run on the fairways and greens that were possibly at their slowest, with the greens staff unable to cut them due to the week’s weather.

John Carlin took third place a few more points behind and one ahead of the last podium placing given on the day to Terry Hodgkiss in fourth.

There were no surprises when both division pots in the 2s were unclaimed.

Note: If you would like to play with The Haven group, you can contact 094 465 5002 or call in to The Haven, 315/13 Soi Lengkee, situated between Third Road and Soi Buakhao.
